OVERVIEW AND HIGHLIGHTS

Tour Bucharest Romanian Athenaeum The tour begins in front of the most beautiful building in Bucharest – the Athenaeum, a marvelous classical concert hall from the 19th century. This building has been a symbol of Bucharest for a long time and it is the best place to start learning about the intricate history of this city. In the area surrounding the Athenaeum there are other impressive old constructions: the former Royal Palace, the University Library, the Athenee Palace Hotel and the statue of King Carol I. As you take in all these superb examples of neoclassical architecture, you’ll also learn of the story of the Romanian Kingdom, how the kings helped modernize Romania and how their rule was abruptly ended. Revolution-Square-Bucharest Standing in opposition to these old structures is the Revolution Square where you’ll find the former headquarters of the Communist Party, several socialist apartment buildings and the Rebirth Memorial for the heroes of the 1989 anti-communist Revolution. In this square you’ll find out about the rise and fall of Nicolae Ceausescu, the infamous communist dictator, what it meant to live under the communist regime and how things changed after 1989 in Romania. Calea-Victoriei-BTrip-Bucharest-Tour The tour continues along the oldest street in the city – Calea Victoriei, where you can admire more of the splendid French inspired architecture that explains the old nickname of Bucharest: Little Paris. From Belle Epoque hotels to Art Deco wonders, there is plenty to see on this street and to revel in the fascinating tales about places like the old National Theatre, the Telephone Palace, the Military Circle. Let yourself be charmed by the Cismigiu Park – a lush garden in the middle of the city with a large variety of vegetation and a picturesque little lake – probably the most romantic spot in Bucharest. Military-Circle-Bucharest-BTrip-Bucharest-Tour Not far from this urban oasis stands in stark contrast the largest administrative building in Europe – the Palace of the Parliament, a monumental construction made during Romania’s communist past under the command of the megalomaniac dictator Ceausescu. You will not only be shocked by the sheer size of this building, but also by the story of how it was made, which saw over 20,000 houses destroyed in the central part of Bucharest. However, it is very inspiring to discover that behind the facades of Ceausescu’s new constructions, there are still a few hidden old houses as well as churches which survived the demolition frenzy. You’ll visit one of the oldest churches in Bucharest, one that was saved in an unbelievable way. The Parliament Palace
